Third Annual Apple Festival Don’t miss the Apple Festival on Sunday October 5th, from 12 Noon to 5:00 PM.
We have moved the Apple Festival this year to the 100+ year old apple orchard at Pinecrest Conference Center, just off Hwy.189 in Twin Peaks. Follow the apple signs on Sunday, you can’t miss it. Great food and entertainment is to be had all day. This is a real family affair, so bring the kids. If you’re a good cook, try your hand at the apple dessert contest. Bring the equivalent of two apple pies and take away the cash. First place winner takes home a crisp $100 bill.
There will also be square dancing and a top Blue Grass band, The Mill Creek Boys, who will entertain the group with their award-winning songs. Also, bring your empty bags as the trees are loaded with apples (yours for the picking), and wear your best Western outfit for a really fun time. For information and details call Gerry Porter 336-1082.
2008 Halloween Mask Ball It is little difficult to call this our 3rd Annual Halloween Masquerade Ball since the fire last October prevented it from happening but all the BBQ beef that had been cooked ahead didn’t go to waste as it was used by the Lake Gregory Yacht Club for a dinner-dance to honor our fire fighters and law-enforcement men and women who did their very best to ensure that most of us had a home to return to.
This year will be much better and a whole new batch of BBQ beef is being cooked down from London Broil to feed our members and friends.
This will be held from 6 – 10 pm on Friday Oct. 24 at the San Moritz Lodge in Crestline. “Nothing Matters”, considered by many to be the most popular band on the mountain will entertain and (it is rumored) that the spirit of Elvis will manifest itself during the evening. Get your costumes ready and call 339-0225 for details. ROW Historical Society Calendar 2008 Sunday Oct. 5: 3rd Annual Apple Fest and BBQ at Pinecrest Conference Center, Twin Peaks, Noon to 5:00 PM. Museum Update
Work on our historical museum is progressing “slowly but surely.” It is a little mind-boggling just to think of all the work that has to be done before this becomes a reality. All of our many artifacts must be cataloged. This alone is a giant task. We are purchasing a computer program used by museums throughout the country for this task.
The exhibit area has to be designed, built, and populated with our artifacts and pictures. Hopefully, the bulk of this work can be done by our member volunteers.
We are going to have to remove the drop ceiling in the main exhibit area and tear out a bunch of unused heating ducts that are now above it. Before we can do that, however, we have to move all of our books, artifacts, vintage newspapers, signs, saws – the list seems infinite – that we have been storing in that area. We need a temporary place to store all of this and it appears that we will be building two 10 x 10 storage sheds behind the museum to facilitate this and also provide us a place for future storage of some of our capital equipment
We have been having monthly “work days” to help accomplish our goals. We do not have the budget to pay to have all this work done; we depend on volunteer help. Whether you can wield a hammer, catalog and organize newpapers and magazines, carry a box, or just help “sort out stuff”, we can use your help
Our next work party will be on Sunday October 24, from noon until three. If you’re not sure you can be of help, call 337-5850 for details and I am sure they will find a task that is just suited for you. Of course, we always welcome any and all financial help we can get.
President's Message
Wow, what a weekend we just had! First off on Saturday, we had the honor of being part of the Lake Arrowhead Home Tour at the historic Pine Mountain Resort, which was formerly the Girl Scouts’ Camp in the San Bernardino Mountains. With almost 1,500 persons passing our booth, we were hoping to run across some ladies who had been at Camp Singing Arrow back in the ‘40s thru the ‘80s, when the camp was operating, because we have a lack of history and pictures for this area and period. Although, we didn't meet anyone, it was a great sales day for us, making it one of our best fund raisers.
The following day, Sunday, we were host to one of the best speakers I have ever heard, Noel Blanc, son of Mel Blanc (the man of a thousand voices – including Bugs Bunny). He kept the audience fascinated with his tales of growing up in the mountains with so many famous stars his dad knew, like Jack Benny, Andy Devine, Roy Rogers and Elvis. When the talk was over, many of the guests then sauntered over to the Arrowhead Queen for a champagne cruise around the lake, for the Movie Boat Tour, which again was a sell-out.
Speaking of Elvis, on Friday, October 24th, the Society will sponsor our annual Masquerade Ball at the San Moritz Lodge in Crestline, where it is rumored, he will return. For more information, call Jim or Doe Huff at 338-0225.
President Lee Cozad presents Cindy Darling a $100 bill for “Best Apple Dessert” at last year’s Apple Fest.
This could be you, so grab an apple peeler and make your favorite and best apple dessert to share at the 3rd Annual Apple Fest at Pinecrest on Oct. 5.
Historical Note: Did you know that many of the apple trees at Pinecrest Conference Center are almost 100 years old? They were planted after Dr. John Baylis purchased that land in 1906 and built the Pinecrest Resort which opened in 1909.
